What is intertextuallity?
Intertextuallity is basically where an obvious reference to another media source is made within a music video, this can mean either; a reference to another music video, a video game, movie or a famous historical point.
Examples:
Californication (Red Hot Chili Peppers):
This music video clearly makes reference to several games from the Sims, but the main game that is made reference to is GTA this is due to the main game interface and the several activities we see taking place within the game, this video features several HUD's that are reputed to belong to the GTA (Grand Theft Auto) Franchise, this music video was made so that Red Hot Chili Peppers could appeal to their target audience (which tends to generally be people aged 16-30)
1985 (Bowling For Soup)
Here is another example of Intellextuality, in this image we see the band bowling for soup dressed up in the same outfits worn by the musicians in the video to Robert Palmer's' "Addicted to love" originally speaking out against the way we look at women in society, Bowling for Soup took this concept and made a joke out of it (probably because the original video did exactly what it was speaking out against...)
